Allergy medicine: Not all Medications work for every Allergy

Allergies Medication

It is not fun to have an allergic reaction. You may suffer with sneezing, coughing, weeping, or even swelling, in some cases. Some people experience migraines because of their allergies while others may go into shock, in extreme cases.

Allergies Medication

Allergies are unique and should be treated differently. Not all medications are composed the same. You have to find the one that is right for your specific type of allergy.

Allergies Medication

Your doctor or allergist can find the best allergy medicine for you and for your special needs. To find something just right for you, however; he may need to conduct a few tests to determine what your particular allergies are.

How Do They Test for Allergies?

The allergist will inject you down your spine with several different allergens.

This way, he can use a variety of substances to decide exactly what your allergy is and the best way probable to resolve it.

You may be tested with anything from dairy products to dust, dander, and even an assortment of grasses or trees. Your allergist is looking for a certain reaction. After being injected, you will be asked to wait awhile before leaving.

If allergic to the substance you have been injected with, your skin will become red and raised. This is a sure sign you are having a reaction. That is how your allergist determines what allergy you have and how to treat your particular malady.

Over the Counter vs. Prescription

If your allergy is mild, then an over the counter medicine may be just the thing for you. For the more severe allergies, over the counter medicines may not work for you. If you have a severe allergy, say for instance, bee stings; then you may require a prescription medicine prescribed from your doctor and carried with you at all times.

If you would like to alleviate your symptoms and feel better, get yourself tested and ask your allergist if there is a medicine available to help you. You need to enjoy life, feel better, and have fewer problems.

Allergies Medication

Allergies refers to an exaggerated reaction by our immune system in response to bodily contact with certain foreign substances. These foreign substances are usually harmless. But, in a person whose body is prone to allergies, these foreign substances are recognized by the body and one part of the immune system is turned on. Allergy-producing substances are called as 'allergens'. Examples include pollens, dust mite, molds, danders, and certain foods.

Allergies Medication

Any substance, whatever its origin, is a possible allergen. Allergens cause the production of immunoglobulin E (IgE), an antibody that all of us have in small amounts. Allergic persons, however, produce IgE in abnormally quantities. Normally, this antibody is important in protecting us from parasites, but not from other allergens.

Allergies Medication

As per Ayurveda, foods are just aliens when we ingest them. These aliens are treated by the Agni (fire) of the body to change into compatible foods for the body. When the Agni doesn't work properly, toxins get produced and accumulation of these toxins reduces the immunity of the body and gives rise to the immunity related diseases. Allergies occur when a hypersensitive immune system reacts to a common or unusual substance.

Allergies Medication

The word allergy is derived from the Greek words "allos," meaning different or changed and "ergos," meaning work or action. People prone to allergies are said to be allergic or atopic. Although allergies can develop at any age, the risk of developing it is genetic. It is related to ones family history of allergy. Ayurvedic medicine has also found that eliminating allergens from the body will help alleviate symptoms associated with chronic fatigue syndrome. Cat Flea Allergy - A 2 Steps Treatment Approach

Allergies Medication

See your cat scratching and biting on its fur frantically?

Allergies Medication

See inflamed, irritated and infected skin on your cat?

Allergies Medication

If yes, your cat may be suffering from cat flea allergy!

Allergies Medication

Cat flea allergy, or commonly known as flea allergy dermatitis in cats is one of the most common single cause for consultation of a vet. This is cause mainly by the bites from fleas when they feed on the blood of the cat.

For a normal cat, it would only feel minor irritation to the fleas bites. Even in the presence of dozens of fleas, these cats will not be greatly affected and they feel little itch. On the other hand, if a flea allergic cat comes in contact with even a single flea, they can have severe itch reaction to the flea bites. Very often, such allergic reaction may continue for days to weeks causing intense itch and discomfort to the cat.

To treat cat flea allergy, there is a 2 steps approach to it.

Prevention:

Cat develops flea allergic dermatitis because of the presence of fleas on them. As such, the only way to prevent the occurrence of this dreaded, tormenting skin disorder in your cat is to prevent the contact of your cat with fleas. No Fleas, No Bites!

Flea control for cats is therefore an absolute necessity. To get rid of cat fleas completely, your choice of a flea treatment product is very important.

The need to treat the surrounding environment, both indoor and outdoors, are often ignored leading to re-infestation after you succeed in eradicating the fleas on your cat.

Treatment:

Cats affected by flea bites allergy is usually in great discomfort. Their constant scratching and biting may lead to inflamed and infected skin.

Keeping the skin clean is therefore important to prevent secondary infection. Bathing your affected cat with a medicated shampoo may be necessary. Antibiotic and steroid cream may be prescribed to relief the itch and inflammation.

Holistic Approach to Dog Skin Allergy

Allergies Medication

The best way to deal with dog skin allergy is to approach the problem holistically. One dog allergy solution is to make sure your dog enjoys overall good health and has a strong immune system. This way, he'll less likely to react to allergies and develop uncomfortable symptoms.

Allergies Medication

The following are surefire ways to beat dog skin allergy:

Allergies Medication

1) Feed your dog some meat - gradually switch to a healthy diet made from high quality whole meats (not meat by-products). You can also try feeding him chicken, turkey, salmon, bison, rabbit, duck, or venison. Remember to rotate the meat.

Allergies Medication

2) Don't give your dog grains - and that means no corn, wheat and other grains. Try alternatives such as gluten-free brown rice, spelt, amaranth, quinoa, or kamut. These are available at health stores.

3) No preservatives - BHT, ethoxyquin, and potassium sorbate are common artificial additives that are toxic to your dog's health. Check your dog food's label if it consists of any of the above ingredients. If it does, buy other dog food. I use wellness for my dogs.

4) Give him supplements - Antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E as well as CoQ10 and selenium strengthens his immune system and helps prevent allergic reactions.

5) Use natural pest control - Adding garlic, Vitamin B1 or brewer's yeast to his diet helps repel fleas. Commercial flea and tick powders, shampoos, and collars are made with toxic chemicals that can irritate your dog's skin and overburden his immune system.

6) Keep his area clean - avoid using chemicals to clean his area and surroundings.

7) Avoid over-vaccinations - over-vaccination damages immunity and can lead to the development of allergies and other problems.

8) Use herbs - They can help the body rid itself of toxins, including those substances that cause allergic reactions such as burdock, alfalfa, red clover, dandelion , and spirulina.

9) Keep your dog clean - avoid cheap commercial shampoos and conditioners - they dry out your dog's hair and skin and even aggravate his allergies.

Dealing with dog skin allergy holistically takes time and commitment but it is the best dog allergy solution you can give to your dog.

Herbal Medicines For Allergies

Allergies Medication

An Allergies is an abnormal reaction of the immune system to substances that cause no symptoms in the majority of people. One in eight people has one or more allergies, and allergic conditions tend to run in families. The condition is described as atopy, and people with classic allergic symptoms are described as atopic. As atopy is often inherited, it may be that the genes responsible for immune control are acting abnormally. Many common conditions such as hay fever, asthma, and eczema are caused by allergic reactions.

Allergies Medication

Allergic responses are triggered by the immune system, whose job it is to recognize foreign proteins (antigens) such as bacteria and viruses, and produce antibodies to fight them. The immune system also sensitizes the lymphocytes (white blood cells) to interact with the antigens to destroy them.

Allergies Medication

In allergies, the immune system mistakes harmless substances (allergens) for antigens and forms antibodies and sensitized lymphocytes to fight them. For example, in hay fever (also called allergic rhinitis) the allergy is the result of breathing in allergens such as dust, pollen, or house mites. Allergies can also be caused by exposure of the skin to chemicals, or an adverse reaction to certain foods.

Allergies Medication

There are several mechanisms involved in allergies, or hypersensitivity reactions as they are also called. Most common allergies are caused by Type 1 hypersensitivity reactions, which cause immediate symptoms. The allergen causes the immune system to produce specific antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE), which coat mast cells present in the lungs and respiratory tract, skin, and stomach. Once activated the mast cells release powerful substances, including histamine and prostaglandins, which cause the immediate and familiar symptoms. An adverse reaction can occur in minutes, or develop over several hours. Typical symptoms include swollen eyes and lips, tingling mouth, sneezing, rashes, red watery eyes, runny nose, abdominal distention and pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. In a severe allergic reaction a sudden drop in blood pressure can occur, resulting in life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

If you suspect an allergy consult a physician for help with diagnosis. First, find out if any other members of Wheat and wheat products are common allergy triggers your family suffer from allergies (asthma, hay fever, eczema). Also, write a diary of your symptoms and try to detect what food, substances, or situations trigger your symptoms.

Some physicians will arrange scientific diagnostic tests for allergies. In the usual test, patches soaked with the substances suspected of causing the allergy are taped to the skin (often on the back). Alternatively, the substances may be injected just below the surface of the skin, The reactions are then monitored to identify the aliergens. When the patches are removed the allergy-producing substances leave an inflamed red area (the same happens on the sites of the skin pricks). The test is not infallible, and red areas may occur with substances to which you are not allergic. With suspected food an exclusion diet may be suggested.

If you suspect food allergy or intolerance in a child, seek help from your physician or dietitian before excluding foods. A restricted diet for children might leave them short of essential nutrients for growth and health.

Treatment

The best treatment is to avoid the allergen. One of the drugs available is antihistamine, which relieves symptoms such as itching from insect bites and stings. However, it can make people drowsy, which is disadvantageous at work, although it may help eczema sufferers to sleep better and therefore reduce scratching. Corticosteroid creams (for eczema) and inhaled corticosteroids (for severe asthma) have side effects. Desensitization or hyposensitization is no longer very popular due to side effects and the lowish success rate. Hyposensitization takes two to three years and involves giving gradually increasing doses of the allergen to increase antibody formation, which is alleged to promote tolerance.

Consult a qualified practitioner/therapist for:

Relaxation Techniques and Alexander

Technique These will help to reduce stress levels.

Homeopathy Treatment will be prescribed according to the individual case but will include desensitization.

Acupuncture This can be extremely effective in treating allergies, balancing the organ energies so that they are able to cope.

Reflexology and Herbal Medicine Both have a good success rate in working with allergies. A herbal practitioner will be able to advise on diet and individual remedies.

Oak Pollen Allergy Relief

Allergies Medication

Oak pollen allergies frequently bring symptoms of coughing, chest congestion, sneezing, wheezing, itchy eyes, sinus congestion, sore throat, and headache. Annually, beginning in March and lasting as late as May, central Texas is coated with sticky, yellow-green pollen from the live oak trees, and hundreds of people suffer respiratory allergy symptoms as a result. However, there are basic strategies you can implement to make oak pollen allergy season a much happier time of year.

Allergies Medication

Oak Pollen Allergy Relief Step 1: avoidance.

Allergies Medication

When possible, avoid extended outdoor activities. Pollen is transported by the wind from the trees to whatever it encounters, and that includes allergy sufferers. If being outdoors is unavoidable, wear a dust mask. This is especially important if you are completing gardening, yard work or outside maintenance that stirs up debris.

Allergies Medication

With warmer spring temperatures, it may be tempting to leave the windows open. But doing so will allow oak pollen to blow into your house and accumulate. This quickly becomes evident by the accumulation of oak pollen on your windowsills. Keep the windows shut as much as possible, especially in the bedroom. To further help lower indoor pollen accumulation, change your HVAC filters periodically. It may also be useful to purchase a free-standing air purifier and run it while sleeping.

Oak Pollen Allergy Relief Step 2: clean contacted surfaces.

Some exposure to oak pollen is inevitable. When you come indoors, take time to rinse your eyes, face and wash your hands. Also, rinse your nose out several times a day. This can be done with either a simple nasal saline solution, available at most drug stores or, alternatively, make your own saline using sea salt, water, and use a neti pot for application, available at most natural food stores. Removing of the majority of the pollen in your nasal passages can provide considerable allergy relief.

Oak Pollen Allergy Relief Step 3: Strive for sustained, allergy elimination.

The most common pharmaceutical allergy treatment options are decongestants, antihistamines and corticosteroids. All of these carry significant side effects. Additionally, while they may provide immediate symptom relief, they do not typically provide a long-term allergy elimination solution.

Safe, convenient non-pharmacutical treatments for respiratory allergies are available. One of these treatments is herbal therapy based on traditional Chinese herbal medicine. In addition to immediate symptom relief, a good formula will help prevent secondary infection, and with continued use, provide allergy elimination. Unlike other herbal therapies, traditional Chinese herbal therapies contain multiple herbs that work in conjunction with each other. Therefore, they often provide greater relief than single herbs.

Whatever herbs you use to provide oak pollen allergy relief, it is important to include herbs that provide symptom relief, immune modulation and secondary infection prevention. For immune modulation, which will help with lasting allergy elimination, astragalus root is extremely beneficial. All herbal remedies should come from trusted sources, made by companies that employ stringent manufacturing guidelines.

It is essential to remember that if you suffer severe asthma-like symptoms, marked by wheezing and difficulty getting enough air, emergency treatment may be necessary. If wheezing causes severe tightness in the chest, light-headedness, or a feeling of fainting, do not hesitate to dial 911. The majority of asthma related deaths in the United States are preventable. By reducing oak pollen exposure, both outdoors and indoors in combination with carefully constructed herbal therapy, the spring can be a happier, healthier time for allergy sufferers.

Chlorine Pool Allergy - How to Deal With It

Allergies Medication

Its summertime and the kids are looking forward to going to the Summer School Programs or the local YMCA and YWCA. The one thing they want to do is go swimming. I remember as a kid going to Venetian Pool in Coral Gables, Fl. It was great, we would spend the entire day there. My brother and I did this all summer long. The kids now go to the local community pools and have a good time also. It is important that all children learn how to swim. You never know when it will come in handy later on. I taught my children how to swim at ages 2 and 3, this is young, but we live near water and in Florida. Another thing, most parents do not think about the possibility of a chlorine allergy from a swimming pool.

Allergies Medication

Chlorine is used to disinfect swimming pools to prevent algae and bacteria from building up in the water. If the water is left untreated, the water becomes detrimental to the health of the users of the pool. I remember once when my daughters went into a pool that was not sterilized properly, they ended up with ear infections from the water. At the time we did not know any better about the dangers of unsterilized water. That was a costly lesson when we had to take them to the Doctor, plus the medication. So, be aware of unsterilized pools.

Allergies Medication

If you have a chlorine allergy, you have to stay away from chloride-containing swimming pools. We have a client whose little boy is allergic to chloride-containing water and is not allowed to go to public swimming pools or to a friends house for a swimming party. It is sad, but true. They take the boy to the beach and he is fine. He has no problem in salt water. The family will invite the other kids in the neighborhood to go with them, this is how they cope with his allergy so he can have a partway normal childhood. This is only one solution for people who have this allergy, go to the beach if it is nearby.

Allergies Medication

There are other forms of disinfectant systems such as "PristineBlue" System, which is an environmentally friendly algicide and bactericide. Another is also environmentally friendly disinfectant called "Baquacil". A third alternative is pools disinfected using "Ozone". Do an Internet search on Google and check all three out. We do not recommend any particular type. You will have to make that decision. I have seen the "Baquacil" System in use with one client, they were happy with the product. Another client uses "Ozone" and they were happy with their disinfectant system also. So, do some investigation on your own and make a choice for your child with Chlorine Allergy.

A friend of mine's little girl developed a rash from swimming in chloride-containing pool water. They did not know what caused it at first until after multiple times in the swimming pool, a rash would appear. Her symptoms were skin and eye irritation, itchiness, nasal congestion and a rash which looks similar to heat rash. They now use one of the alternative disinfectant systems for their swimming pool. She was told by the Doctor to use a sunscreen to help cope with the allergy. Her mother did not like that idea, so they changed to a "Baquacil" System disinfectant.

In conclusion, if your child has a Chlorine Allergy, you will have to get innovative in finding ways for them to go swimming. It is important that all children learn how to swim. The ocean is a great place if you live nearby. If you live inland, you will have to get some of the alternative systems such as "Baquacil", "PristineBlue" or use "Ozone". As always, if you are having an allergic reaction or a medical problem, consult with your Doctor first before doing anything.
